The Pele of women’s soccer is coming to Castro Valley.
FC Gold Pride made its biggest move of the offseason Thursday by picking Marta in the Women’s Professional Soccer dispersal draft that placed players from the disbanded Los Angeles Sol with the league’s eight remaining clubs.
The Gold Pride used its third overall pick to select the Brazilian midfielder who is considered the world’s best female player.
"The four-time FIFA player of the year — you can’t turn that away," Gold Pride owner Nancy NeSmith said of the only athlete to win the prestigious soccer award four times.
The Gold Pride did pass on taking Marta last year when holding the first pick of the foreign draft because of her high salary, believed to be almost $500,000.
Now ownership sees her value. With Marta scoring 10 goals in 19 matches, the Sol was the marquee team in the WPS’s inaugural season. It averaged 6,382 fans a game at the Home Depot Center and had the best regular-season record (12-3-5). The Gold Pride hopes Marta, 23, can replicate those numbers in the Bay Area.
The club drew its biggest crowds when she and the Sol played at Buck Shaw Stadium last year.
"We are in this to win," NeSmith said. "We also want the team to survive. Financially, Marta was our best bet."
