GRADE 9 CLINIC DESCRIPTION
The Grade 9 Referee Clinic is an eight (8) hour course usually taught in two, four (4) hour sessions or one, eight (8) hour session. The first session is a classroom session. The second session is a combination field and exam session.
The Grade 9 Referee Clinic was designed to train adults 18 years and older to officiate younger youth recreational games, but CVSC will also accept youths 12 to 17 years old. The course is extremely fast paced with little time to absorb the material.
Due to the speed at which the instructor must go through the material, students should visit the USSF web site and read the Laws of the Game and review the presentations prior to attending the course. An online copy can be found in the Referee section under the Laws of the Game link. You can also use the link in the Laws of the Game page on this web site.
In the first session, the instructor quickly goes through the Laws of the Game explaining the rules and providing practical knowledge and “how to” experience. Each student should bring a note pad and writing instruments to the classroom session.
The second session starts on the field. The instructor demonstrates the mechanics (signals) used by Referees and Assistant Referees. All students participate so each student should wear footwear suitable for walking on a field. At the completion of the field session, the students move to the classroom for the exam.
The second session ends with an exam. The exam is a 50 question multiple choice test. Students need to obtain a 75% or better score to pass the test. Students that fail the exam may be able to arrange a make-up exam as per the guidelines for the Grade 8 make-up exams.
Students each receive a copy of the “Laws of the Game” and the “Guide to Procedures” books. The instructor refers to these books throughout the course so the students should take notes during the session.
A NON-REFUNDABLE $10 check ($15 for non-CVSC members) reserves your seat and pays for the cost of the instructor and the books. Students are responsible for the cost their USSF registration. In 2009, the Grade 9 registration fee is $40. At the start of the course, each student must provide a check made out to CVSC for the amount of the registration fee. These checks will be taken by the instructor at the end of the course to cover your registration fee. Only students passing the exam pay the registration fee. Checks will be returned for any student who does not pass the exam. See the 2009 Referee Fee Change document for more information about the 2009 registration fee changes.
Students are responsible for purchasing their own uniforms and equipment. See the uniforms page for more information. A handout will be provided during the course that lists some sources for referee uniforms and equipment and how to request game assignments.
